August had told him they were leaving early in the morning to head up to the prison. August's police friend, Alice, was coming with them. Bruce didn't care really. He was stressed out as it was, and her tagging along didn't make a difference. August seemed to think his mother might open up more to a woman. August didn't know his mother.
Bruce waited impatiently in the car as August spoke with Desmond outside on the front steps of the police station. Their heads were bent together as they read some words on a notepad. "I'll give you a report when I get back," August called to him as he headed to the car.
"Wonder what that's about," Bruce commented from the back seat.
Alice turned around and gave him a shrug. "Who knows with those two?"
Bruce glanced at August as he got in the car and behind the wheel. "Desmond looked pissed off."
"When is he not pissed off lately?" August grumbled as he started the engine.
Desmond stood staring at them as they drove away. Bruce turned around and looked at him through the back window, and Desmond seemed to smile.
"What now?" Alice asked August as Bruce turned back around.
"He wanted to come with us."
"Why?" Bruce blurted.
"I guess he wanted to be in on the interview. I said I'd give him a report. He's so afraid of missing something."
"Oh, and do you think you’ve missed something?" Bruce asked.
August looked at Bruce in the rearview mirror as he took the road out of Whitefield. "What does that mean?"
"I… I don't know really, nonsense I guess. Forget it," Bruce said.
"They're busy enough there," Alice added, "questioning people, teachers at the school, and so on. You'd think he'd be more interested in supervising what his own men are doing than looking over your shoulder all the time."
"Yes, everyone is a suspect." Bruce tried to sound comical. "Even your ninety-year-old grandmother is not above suspicion."
"Funny boy." August smiled.
Alice laughed a little. "He's right, given the fact that we have so few leads."
"You alright?" August asked Bruce.
"Sure."
"You didn't eat any breakfast."
"I'm a little stressed."
"She can't hurt you."
"I know. Does she know we're coming?"
"No. Only the warden. I didn't think it was a good idea to tip her off, give her time to prepare too much."
"Is the prison far?" Alice asked.
"No, Goffstown is not far from Bedford. An hour or so and we'll be there."
"Think I'll nap. You mind?" Bruce asked.
"Go ahead," August said.
Bruce closed his eyes. Someone was smiling at him in his mind. It won't be long now. He's waiting for you.
